Walking:

There are numerous walks of varying lengths from the doorstep. These can be as simple as walking through Dufton Ghyll or Flakebridge, especially at bluebell time, or on the pathways between villages. Then there is the distinctive Dufton Pike which you can walk around or up, to take in the wide open views of the Eden Valley with the Lake District beyond. Next is the amazing glaciated valley of High Cup Nick, a very popular reasonably strenuous day walk. Cross Fell, the highest point on the Pennines, can also be reached. Slightly further afield, within 25 mins drive, the choice is endless. A few of our favourite easy walks  are Aira Force, the shores of Ullswater (possibly combining with a lake steamer), Lowther castle grounds including the lovely river Lowther, or the Poetry Walk at Kirkby Stephen.  The shortest but most rewarding walk on our list is Castlerigg stone circle, which has a stunning setting surrounded by mountains. The most varied takes in a riverside ramble, impressive man-made caves and another stone circle, ending up at a working watermill with a great café. The nearby Lakes offer endless possibilities, with for example Blencathra and the challenging Sharp Edge just under 40 minutes away.

Cycling:

Our quiet lanes are ideal for cycling for all ages and abilities. Various routes take you through picturesque villages on the edge of the Pennines to enjoy scenery, cafes and pubs en route. If you do not have your own bike we can put you in touch with Jason at Inspiring Cycling who rents out bikes as a complete package including transport to and from our cottages, helmets and  locks . He can do multi day rates and has 20 bikes of varying heights. We would be happy to talk to him or put you in touch with him.

Alternatively, try electric bikes to get further afield with less effort! These can also be hired, in Penrith.

Canoeing:

We can put you in touch with activity providers who will have boats and all the essential extras for either guided trips on Ullswater, our nearest lake, or Derwent water. Their trips can be half or full days and can include BBQ dinners on the beach. You can also do self guided trips on Derwent water by hiring from Nichol End Marine.
